  15. Disinfectant is fully compatible with System 7, including virtual memory,

  17. 32 bit addressing, and file sharing.

  21. Leave the Disinfectant INIT in the Extensions folder. Do not move the INIT

  23. to the System Folder. The ΓÇ£Install Protection INITΓÇ¥ command installs the

  25. INIT in the proper location in the Extensions folder. Do not move it.

  29. If you try to repair an infected file, Disinfectant may tell you that the file

  31. is busy and recommend that you either ΓÇ£restart using a locked Apple Disk

  33. Tools disk and try againΓÇ¥ or ΓÇ£rebuild the desktop.ΓÇ¥ Restarting using the
  34.  
  35. Disk Tools disk was discussed in the ΓÇ£Quick StartΓÇ¥ section above.

  41. You should also be aware that System 7 is completely immune to the
  42.  
  43. ΓÇ£Desktop fileΓÇ¥ viruses (WDEF and CDEF). These viruses never activate,
  44.  
  45. spread, or cause any damage under System 7. Both hard disks and floppy
  46.  
  47. disks are immune to these viruses under System 7. Since the Disinfectant
  48.  
  49. INIT detects and blocks viruses when they first try to attack your
  50.  
  51. system, and since the Desktop file viruses never attack under System 7,
  52.  
  53. the Disinfectant INIT will not detect them under System 7.

  57. System 7 hard drives, however, often contain an old System 6 format
  58.  
  59. Desktop file. If you restart using an infected System 6 startup floppy,
  60.  
  61. this file can and will become infected by WDEF or CDEF. The virus will
  62.  
  63. only be active, however, when you start up your Mac with System 6. The
  64.  
  65. proper way to protect against this problem is to install a copy of the
  66.  
  67. Disinfectant protection INIT in your System 6 System folder.

  71. You should also be aware of a problem with System 7ΓÇÖs new file sharing
  72.  
  73. feature. If you share a folder and permit write access to it by granting
  74.  
  75. the ΓÇ£make changesΓÇ¥ privilege with the new ΓÇ£SharingΓÇ¥ command, it is
  76.  
  77. possible for files in the shared folder to become infected by a virus over
  78.  
  79. the network, even if you have the Disinfectant INIT installed on your Mac.

  81. The INIT will, however, prevent the virus from spreading to your
  82.  
  83. non-shared folders. It will also completely block any attempt by the virus
  84.  
  85. to execute its viral code on your Mac or cause any damage to your Mac.

  89. We have always had the problem of viruses spreading over a network to
  90.  
  91. files in writable folders on dedicated AppleShare file servers. With
  92.  
  93. System 7ΓÇÖs file sharing, this has now also become a problem on personal
  94.  
  95. Macs.

  99. Virus infection over the network is only one of many serious security
  100.  
  101. problems with writable shared folders. Writable shared folders are
  102.  
  103. inherently insecure, and no kind of anti-viral or other security software
  104.  
  105. can prevent damage to their contents. To minimize these problems, we
  106.  
  107. recommend that you limit write access to your shared folders to only
  108.  
  109. trusted individuals. Never grant write access to guests (any user). The
  110.  
  111. only way to eliminate the problems completely is to never grant the
  112.  
  113. ΓÇ£make changesΓÇ¥ privilege to anyone except yourself.
